Liverpool Design Festival 2010

Personal, Researchon November 19th, 2010No Comments

This was my first Liverpool Design Festival I’ve attended in the stunning St. George’s Hall. There were over 90 contemporary design makers showcasing their works. These were some of the ones which caught my eye:

Rebecca Gouldson’s Metal Wall pieces- beautiful etching and detail.

Hannah Lobley’s unique recycled Paper Art.

Rethinkthings, founded by Ilsa Parry (winner of BBC’s Design for Life with Phillippe Starck) and their inventive design products.

Kinouchi Business Cards

A strong typographical approach was key to the Kinouchi branding, which was carried across to these self-promotional business cards. These square-cut cards offer an alternative to the norm of business cards and have a beautiful sturdy and tactile quality to them. They are double sided and have been hot foil stamped with both silver and black foil.

Trash the Dress

Trash the Dress

After the joy of the wedding, we discovered that we didn’t need to dry clean the dress and pack it away to never be used again. Instead we decided to get our money’s worth and do a ‘Trash the Dress’ shoot. As members of the National Trust, we chose the historically picturesque location of Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire.

Some of the photos range from the Fairytale Gothic to the light-hearted Princess. These were some of my favourites. The full set can be seen on my Flickr page.

Cheryl and Jason Wedding Day

As you can see, there has been a relative dearth of entries and work lately. Thats because I met the most perfect lady in the world and decided to marry her on July 11th 2009. We had a magical, fairytale day. I’m a very happy man.

Thank you to my very good friend Marie Morris from Creative Lens Media for these particular photos.

Luke Williamson, joint Creative Director at WCRS will be speaking on 21 May 2009 at the Manchester Metropolitan University as part of D&AD’s President’s Lectures series. They’ve created some of my favorite spots being ‘Effortless’ for Brylcreem, the Orange Cinema campaigns and the awareness test for transport for London.

With their huge clients and witty approach, this should be a lecture worth visiting! Consider my tickets booked!

Benches of Wales

We stumbled across these gems as we drove to Gwrych Castle in Abergele- curiously standing in the edges of obscure country lanes. Inspires me to create a photographic collection of curiosities in Wales.

Giant Origami Crane

origamitube

I found this whilst self-indulgently googling my name. We folded this in 2006 and my friend uploaded it to youtube (without my permission). Now someone has stolen it and put it on origamitube! I find it quite amusing.

A few of us went down to London to take part in the 4 Designers conference held in Leicester Square. Whilst the talks were inspirational and informative, London herself is an endless resource of visual stimuli. Visits to the Design Museum were essential and Daryl’s tour of the elite side of London was awe inspiring with various conceptual store layouts and a discovery of my new favourite stores- Magma and Muji.

Blogroll

I thought I should share where I get a wealth of my inspiration: my daily list of blogs. Please restrain from addictive checking of these sites repetitively at least three times a day.

Some of these were taken from NWSAD Collective so many thanks.

Polaroid Panic

Polaroid

I’ve always wanted a Polaroid camera and I managed to snatch this one from eBay for £10. They have a charm and quality to them which no digital photograph or manipulation could ever achieve. Unfortunately they have a limited shelf life since Polaroid announced that they were stopping the production of their film last year. I’ve managed to get some which expires October 2009 as they are expected to completely run out by December! They will be perhaps the last few photos taken with a Polaroid so I’m quite excited. Hopefully a Photography Saviour will step in to produce them again.
